Hair transplant briefly explained

The most common use of hair transplantation is hormonal hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). The hair roots are hypersensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) formed in the body and precipitate prematurely. This hypersensitivity is genetic and, sooner or later, will affect most men. First, the hair on the forehead, temples and upper head less, later remains in heavily affected only a hair ring left. Why the hair on the back does not fail has a simple reason. The local hair roots are relatively insensitive to the hormone (DHT). That’s why the hair on the back of the head does not fall out. And it is exactly these resistant hairs that can be transplanted with their roots well to the places where the more sensitive relatives have previously failed. This is how the transplantation of the own hair works. It does not have to be 100% transplanted so that the hair looks pretty dense and full. Usually half is enough to have visually full hair.Another reason for hair loss is skin diseases or rarely even injuries. Diseases such as alopecia areata can cause a circular pattern of hair loss that unfortunately persists.

Hair transplantation techniques

In so far as the transplanted hairs are to look as dense and genuine as possible, they must be implanted individually. The FUE and FUT hair transplantation techniques are particularly suitable for this.

Only single hair implantation can create a natural hair appearance, where, as the name suggests, single hairs form the front line on the forehead, while smaller clusters of two to four follicles provide denser hair on the top of the head.

Therefore, in all procedures (FUE/FUT), the new hairs are inserted individually (Fig. 4 and 8 in the diagram), while there are differences in the removal: individually from the scalp or as a complete strip from the back of the head. The choice of procedure depends on the donor hair required and whether the aesthetic procedure is to be hidden under the longer hair of the back of the head afterwards. The diagram on the side shows the difference in the removal procedure. With the FUE procedure (pictures 1-3), the hair is also removed individually. In the FUT procedure, on the other hand (pictures 5-7), they are taken from a strip of skin from the back of the head.

Specifically, these two basic methods have proven themselves internationally and over many years for hair transplantation.

Types of hair transplantation

Hair falls out for various reasons in different areas of the body. A tonsure forms on the top of the head, the receding hairline grows on the sides and later a large bald area develops on the head, the bald head. But the hair on the crown of the head, eyebrows, beard or eyelashes can also become thin and fall out completely.

Areas into which hair can be transplanted

With modern hair transplantation techniques, all types of hair loss can be treated well. One of the doctors at the Fontana Clinic in Mainz will be happy to advise you if you would like to know how you can regain permanently thick hair. The most common medical procedures in the field of hair surgery cover all problem areas, from eyebrows and beard to climbing hairline, bald heads to fine eyelashes.

Hair transplant procedure

The procedure begins with a detailed consultation and examination by a doctor. As always in aesthetic and plastic surgery, it is important that doctor and patient agree on the wishes, expectations and what is medically feasible and decide together on the best way to achieve this. This is assisted by before and after photos, which are shown during the consultation and which patients can use to see how successful a hair transplant can be.

In this way, the best method can be chosen in each case, with which the required amount of transplantable hair can be obtained as gently and safely as possible to cover the sparse areas. In general, these are the FUE and FUT techniques. Of course, the price is also discussed, which is calculated individually.

Once the patient has decided on a hair transplant, he or she only has to come to the clinic once to have the treatment performed.

On the day of the operation, the exact procedure is determined, lines are finally drawn and the donation area is shaved. From there, the hairs are removed individually (FUE) or as a strip (FUT), processed and reinserted individually.

Depending on the area or the amount of hair, the duration of the operation varies between half a day and a complete day. The patient hardly notices the surgical procedure; it is performed under local anaesthesia and, if desired, in semiconscious sedation. The same applies to the minimally invasive, non-surgical techniques. Both techniques can be performed on an outpatient basis. An overnight stay in the clinic is not necessary and you can go home after the final medical examination, but you should not drive yourself.

The new hairs do not always grow immediately, often the hair will fall out after some time. This is not a big deal, because it is not isolated hair that has been transplanted, but complete hair follicles with their roots. And these roots sometimes repel the old hair, which is only a few millimetres long, before they start producing a new one, which then remains permanent.

The Costs

The costs of hair transplantation are always calculated individually. They are made up of the patient’s wishes regarding the area to be covered, the amount of hair (grafts) required for this, the removal technique and costs for the duration, aids and anaesthesia.

Patients at the Fontana Clinic in Mainz receive a binding offer during the consultation once they have spoken to the doctor and he has examined them.

The cost of hair transplantation largely depends on the number of individual grafts that have to be transplanted. For small areas like the eyebrows, fewer grafts are needed than for a complete bald head. Therefore, the costs can range between € 2,000 and € 8,000.
